Why is a loaded new A5 more than a loaded BMW 335i coupe?

that Audi spreads itself so thin with so many different powertrain combos. Lower resale value/residual don't help either.

Who gives a $hit about status dude, Audi drivers don't drive Audi's because of status, they drive them because they are great cars. I will agree with you maybe Audi should up the HP so it equals BMW, however, the A5 is a much more refined, 10x's nicer looking both inside and outside, and if you ever compare BMW interiors and quality build to Audi they are inferior. BMW makes great driving cars, as in fun to drive, but overall quality hands down Audi better, that's why it's more expensive.
The point people who buy Audi, aren't buying them because they can't afford a BMW, they buy them because they want an Audi.

Audi drivers don't give a $hit about status, if you still care about this, it's not for you. If you need your car to grab the ladies attention, then you need to get a BMW. Audi drivers dude are confident enough to get an Audi becuase no brainer they no it's more quality, being as an Audi Driver is confident, women are attracted most assuredly to a man who is sure of himself. YOu my friend are waning on being that man, so, go with the crutch, I mean the status, and a get a BMw.
LOL, Audi drivers don't need a reason to convert, we buy Audi's because that's what we want, not because society says it's ok.

Like others, I think your thought process is off base here. If you need the fastest car with the blue & white propeller, then BMW makes a fine car. I've owned both and will go with Audi again for my next car.
That said, I think your math is a bit off as well. The pricing for comparably equiped cars goes as follows:
328xi coupe < Audi A5 < BMW 335xi coupe < BMW M3 < Audi RS5.
So.. i actually think Audi is very clever with their pricing. They have created car in the A5/S5 that has a higher quality feel vs. the 3-series, with many comparing to higher end luxury vehicles (i.e. Maserati, Aston, BMW 6-series) vs. an entry level model in the BMW 3. And a real viable BMW alternative for folks who don't want to follow the pack of posers... I cant' drive 20 feet around here without seeing a BMW 3-series... so for me, Audi is a cool alternative.
So, Audi has priced themselves a slight premium to most logical BMW comparables. They will definintely find a market for that sort of buyer profile I described, less interested in following the "most popular".
Plus - there is value in the premium paid. THe comparable 3-series has 18" wheels vs. 19" in the A5/S5, parktronic vs. rear view camera, B&O audio vs. whatever premium system BMW uses, the V8 growl which is priceless...
