Default Winter Tires -- 225/45-18???

Anyone run on this size? Tire rack has it listed an an alternative size.

Running a thinner tire should be better and rolling diameter is almost the same.

Default For the A5, tirerack lists 245-40-18 as a proper size.

I think running 45-18 would alter your speedometer, unless I'm wrong. Anybody else could comment? I'm also shopping for winter tires for my car.

Default Rolling diameter is *very* close.

245 40 18 25.7165354330709"
225 45 18 25.9724409448819"

Tire rack has it listed as an 'alternative' as well.

Default True but these are not light cars

so although it will be easier for the 225 to slice through the snow than a 245, unless you are spending most of your time in the winter driving on snow, I would prefer to have the larger contact patch for dry conditions. Just my $.02...

Default shouldn't be too much of an issue.

There are load values of 93 even on the 245's (in their OE selecctions).

All the snows in the 225's have a load rating of 95 -- speed ratings do differ though.

Default Understood but wasn't concerned about load rating -

was thinking more of performance in driving on dry pavement. 225s + 3,800 pound car = not the best handling IMHO. Although you would be able to get the car to slide a lot more :-)

Default

very true. Just wondering if a 245 wide tire will be like a snow shoe!

Default Absolutely but for the other 95% of the time when I'm driving

during a New England winter, I'm going to be enjoying better grip ;-)

Default I hope these things are good in the snow, I bought the S5 as a winter car

I hope the snow performance is good. I will of course be putting full snows on, Blizzaks or Pirelli's
