I guess I should've quoted you in the first place. I was verifying the bolded part that yes it works with External SIM.
No I didn't have an active subscription when I got my car, but i do have an active subscription now. What I'm trying to say is that the overlay is compatible external SIM. I don't remember if you can just use the external SIM for Google earth though so I can't verify that. I don't think you can do it via obd11 or vcds. I think you'd have to dig deeper (hack your Audi).

Why is everyone asking around. Surely there is someone on here that doesn't have a valid Audi Connect sub. Just set your car into WiFi client mode and try it. The instructions are in this very forum. Just look for Google in Canada, its the same thing you need to try. And in your case most of the settings will already be in place except for turning the car into a WiFi client, which is switched off by default.
Having the car set up as a WiFi client is super useful for lots of reasons, not just this. And takes less than a minute to do on VCDS or ODBEleven. It's literally one Adaptation change.

No he is saying that if you have an Audi Connect sub, you can enable the external SIM and it would still work....which was never in doubt.

Yeah, I am curious too, what is the adaptation to turn on the Wifi Client mode in the MMI? Its not listed in the google doc for coding changes.

This horse has been beaten to death. In the US, it doesn't matter which data route you take. Without a paid Audi subscription, you are SOL. The only service I recall possible without an Audi subscription is traffic if you subscribe to the somewhat inferior Sirius traffic service. And I guess hotspot too if you consider that a service.

Module 5F : IDE03471-ENG06576-Vehicle configuration-WiFi_Client_HMI - ON
As I said before to get the MMI to act as a WiFi client, you need to switch off the Data Module from the Connection Manager, Online settings. Then when you go to WiFi settings the client options will become selectable and you scan for your phone's Hotspot and connect to it.
