I picked up my S5 this past Saturday. It had 2019/2020 pre-installed. This is my first upgrade.

In general, have those users better acquainted with these updates found the updates worthwhile? Hard to know what’s changed as there is no change log but I assume it’s best to keep the maps up to date as long as they are free.

Also, I tried to do the update with a USB and my USB (formatted ExFat) was not detected in either slot 1 or 2. Any trick to get a USB to work? I’m putting the files on an SD card now and will try that after work today to see if it works.

ExFat formatting does not seem to be accepted by the MMI unit as a valid format. I’ve had great success with FAT 32 devices.

Good to know. I figured that it might have something to do with the formatting. I’m on a MAC so didn’t have that option to format the card. Might have to try my wife’s laptop then. Does the same go for SD cards?

Yes — I’m not 100% positive but SD cards are formatted using FAT 32. As for MAC, there were instructions in my first post in this thread.

The instructions worked perfectly as you described on the MAC so thank you for that. It’s just the disk utility doesn’t give me the option to format in FAT32. I’ll use a windows computer to format and try again.

As Nikon1 said FAT32. Don't know if Mac will recognize FAT32 though. You may have to use Windows computer for the updates.

From the manual (page 244 in the 2019 manual) the supported file-system formats are:

Memory Cards (SD/SDHC/SDXC/MMC): exFAT, FAT, FAT32, NTFS
USB Storage: FAT, FAT32, NTFS

Theoretically, if you were past the free maps limit and were able to download the most current maps from an alternative source, would you still be able to upgrade?

Thanks for that. Makes sense. That means my exFAT SD card should work and would explain why my exFAT USB did not work. Can’t wait to try it out when I get home.

As you have to register on the Audi website via your VIN to create your account, I would be very surprised that if you got a map upgrade file from someone who was still under their 5 update limit it would install in your over 5 free updates in your MMI. I’m pretty sure there is some type of serial matching going on between the MMI in your car and an embedded key in the file.

Pure speculation on my part but that’s usually what happens with upgrade’s tied to existing licenses.
