map downloads are not VIN specific, you can share them freely and it will not help/hurt. when you pay for a new map update, you are really paying to raise the max map version the MIB2 unit will accept. the 5 free map updates is accomplished by shipping the car with a max version 5 iterations ahead of the currently released one at the time of manufacture.

the map releases themselves contain an incremental version/date code and the MIB2 unit is “licensed” to utilize map versions below a specific value. the last two hex digits in the 02310024.md5 filename represent the version/date code. 1e is 2018/2019, 20 is 2019, 22 is 2019/2020, 24 is 2020, etc.

the map version code is incorporated into the signed payload and can’t be modified without also re-signing for the complete payload and placing that updated signature in the metainfo2.txt file or else the MIB2 unit will reject the payload.

Thanks for the detailed explanation.

So I’ve done the update, not sure why though. The navigation is the worst to set a destination for that I’ve ever seen and it’s not the first time I’ve tried.Tried for 20 mins to set my son’s home address. What a PIA. Never did get it set. When I had enough and told her what I thought of “her”, she gave me the address of some fish market in Los Angles. My wife was laughing so hard she had tears in her eyes.......

I have had the same experience.
This update is worse than the prior - it provides wrong directions, make you go around in circles and, in general, cannot seem to locate the car in the correct spot.
Last night it took us 2 blocks past our intended destination before it said, "You have arrived, destination on the ...."
This has happened multiple times.

Thanks for the detail....so if you wish to purchase additional updates after 5 does the dealer recode MIB2 to add additional updates.....say go from 5 to 7 or 10?
If so maybe there's a way in OBD11 coding to do the same? Suggestions?

Not sure what the dealer does — but I’d be willing to bet that it’s not going to be cheap, nor a good deal.

As far as being able to reprogram the MMI — as OBD Eleven is supported by VAG, I cannot see VAG allowing / supporting this function as Map Updates are an easy revenue stream for the Dealers Service Group. I can only hope that I’ll be proven wrong.

very simplified steps:
- dealer connects vehicle via ODIS
- dealer enters map license activation details
- ODIS sends vehicle identification data and activation request to remote auth server
- auth server returns an updated signed payload containing a current list of FECs for the vehicle. the new list will now include a FEC representing the later map version (as described in my previous reply)
- ODIS uploads updated FEC data to vehicle
- vehicle validates the signed FEC payload
- new map updates will now be accepted by the MIB2 unit within the limits of the new FEC

Nikon thanks for sharing. Unfortunately my house is still not on this map update. Maybe we will make the cut next year!

That just means that people whom you do not want to find you, can’t! Not always a bad thing.

(See “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood” for that explanation)
