Which of the criteria is/are different for LiquiMoly compared with those three to say that it's overrated, and that those three are the top?

I'm not saying you're incorrect--I'm asking out of ignorance, trying to find out what's important in those bar charts.

I was thinking about looking for a thread about this topic or starting one, so I'm kind of glad the topic came up.

Here is what i pay attention to in this German test that I take of value and found Liquimoly to be overrated mediocre oil compared to Mobile 1 ESP and Motul:

HTHS = A higher value indicates a thicker oil film at high temperatures - which means a better protection of the engine against wear, as the oil film remains permanent and guarantees lubrication. A lower HTHS value, on the other hand, has the advantage that fuel savings and lower emissions can be achieved due to lower internal friction. Mobile 1 ESP is second highest in this test and overall keeps winning in the below categories.

TBN = A high TBN value (mgKOH/g) indicates a longer protection of the engine from the negative effect of harmful acids. Mobil 1 ESP is second again.

Sulfate Ash = A high content of sulfated ash increases the risk of clogging the fine pores of the diesel particulate filters or the fins of the catalytic converter but increases oil service life (not a big deal if you're not burning oil). MORE IMPORTANTLY a low sulphated ash content reduces the service life of the engine oil due to lower alkaline reserves. Motul is the second highest here which means has the longest service life. Mobile 1 ESP is in the middle.

That being said... liquimoly is not nearly as good on this list as Ravenol, Fuchs, Mobil 1 ESP, and Motul. Is liquimoly a bad oil? Not really but it's also not great or the best. I personally am using Motul 5w30 for the summer because I got it for cheap but in the winter I will permanently switch to Mobil 1 ESP 0w20 in winter and 5w30 in summer.

I used to use factory 508 oil from Audi and changed it every 5K along with the filter. Car was tuned on APR stage 1 and burned a decent amount of oil but nothing alarming considering the tune was fairly aggressive.

As the B9 A5 family uses both VW 508.00 (S5 TFSI, A5 40 TFSI) and VW 504.00 (RS4/5, A5 45 TFSI) the poll results may be a bit confusing. Also, per below, 5W-30 is not current spec for VW 504.00.

The linked ato24.de test is great. The linked 0W-30 test within the VW 508.00 test will be a helpful read too, as it better describes the role of each attribute. It also includes the important disclaimer:
In general, it is like a farce when oil manufacturers advertise their engine oils as the best oil on the market. In particular, engine oils are characterized by multiple interactions in their chemical properties. Put simply, the improvement of one property can lead to the deterioration of another.
I liked that! As well as their comment at the end of the 0W-30 test, which is sound advice:
In summary, it cannot be said whether a high or low HTHS value is better. This answer can only be given if, for example, the specified (they mean within an oil spec, eg 508 or 504, but NOT across different specs) HTHS limit values (by standards such as ACEA, API, etc.) and the temperatures and shear forces occurring are taken into account.

In simple terms, if a car drives more short distances in urban traffic, lower temperatures and shear forces occur, a lower HTHS value would be advantageous.A fast driven car during long distances would, on the other hand, benefit from a higher HTHS value.
The reason the VW 508.00 test appeared in 2019 was that the exclusive supply agreement with Castrol had ended, so there were now many options out there. Castrol were the OEM partner with Audi when the EA839 (and EA888 Type 3-R) was designed - they were part of the development team. This is a low friction engine design, and required a new oil standard. In fact, Audi had moved their OEM supply contract from Castrol to Fuchs. Looking at the test result, their VW oil looked closer to Castrol than Fuchs, so could have been older stock. This has all been discussed before:

https://www.audiworld.com/forums/aud.../#post25435764

The only point of interest beyond that older post was that there was a delay of three or four months with the RS4/5 with thermal management issues - the paint on the bonnet was bubbling from the heat at the top of the engine (extreme use scenario obviously, ie Nürburgring Nordschleife testing). I imagine that prompted the decision to use VW 504.00 even though the higher friction impacts on efficiency and the oil deteriorates faster.

Worthwhile noting that VW 504.00 spec shifted a couple of years back, and that only 0W-30 meets the standard, not 5W-30 (before, either could be used). If chassis, post #4, looked at revised specs for Porsche C30, he will see the same. Also to note, VW 508.00 is a Longlife IV oil, whilst VW 504.00 is only Longlife III. This is not particularly significant for North American region cars, is more relevant for European (specifically Euro 6D and later) region cars. Although you preface your posts with Germany, you must be driving a NA region model, otherwise you would be in a cabriolet.

Final point is that the SSP 655 you linked is not accurate - maybe be a draft someone got hold of and publicly posted. Plenty of them out there. The official SSP 655 from erWin, for the page in question, is:

You are correct about confusing and that is my fault as I was referring to the 508 specific crowd which would be A/S models ONLY.

504 can be 0w30 or 5w30 as long as it carries the certification like Motul 8100 X-Clean 5w30.The VW certifications has less to do with viscosity and more about the content of the oil formulation.

I have been doing some extensive research on BITOG forum and reading what an actual oil engineer has been saying. Then I started verifying his claims by reading oil formulations. This particular guy even recommended using VW511.00 oil as it was designed for RS and S vehicles and the formulation is stupid good in Mobil 1. I am very tempted to start digging into that in the future.

As for 508 vs 504. an engineer on the forum said the only difference was a lowered HTHS in 508 for fuel efficiency and high TBN and PAO in 508 for longer OCI. He even stated he would use 504 over 508 which shorter OCI's.That being said, I started looking at the chemical formulations of Motul 0w20 (508) and the Motul 5w30 (504). Sure enough the 504 has a higher HTHS and lower TBN. Even further is the closeness in density at 68f/20c. This further makes me more comfortable in using 504 over 508 for engine longevity with a 4k-5k OCI due to reduced sulfated ash and TBN in 504.

This is one of MANY forums I have read regarding oil formulation and the deep rabbit hole of formulations I went down the past few weeks before posting here... https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/th...matter.333025/

I am willing to bet that switching to 504 or 511 would reduce this oil burning.

Hello guys,
New here and just read this post and I think is related to my query so I will ask here, if anybody will be able to brig some light will really appreciate. So, picked an used A5 2.0 TFSI MHEV 40 S line Coupe 2dr Petrol S Tronic (build 11.2021) and try to figure out what engine oil is recommended for this engine, grade and spec. I usualy change oil myself every 5000 mls with an oil extractor. Also, if anybody know, where I can buy an oil dipstick what will do an accurate reading for this engine?

Many thanks.

0w-30 Liqui Moly, and I've got 20 quarts of it sitting on the shelf in the garage waiting to go.

maybe but I always kept an eye on it and changed it every 5K and the capacity of the vehicle was pretty good so it never concerned me. it burned very little oil before I turned up the boost with a tune. it is totally normal to expect blowby with a car easily pushing 125+ ponies over what the engineers at Audi intended the car's output to be...

That is the EA888 B-cycle engine, and the correct oil spec is VW 508.00.

Also there should be a decal in the engine bay which lists the required oil.
