mine did the same thing...ended up drilling right through the plate and just using the 2 actual screws that hold the bracket to the car, to hold the plate too...capped them with chrome finished caps since my plate holder is chrome too

This is the universal hold the dealer put on for me, a cheap $10 Amazon item that works better than Audi's 70 OEM part, go figure.
