Default How I went from hating to loving Audis

First, let me say I'm a car guy. Doesn't mean I want a car with 700 HP. I much prefer to drive my 2018 A5 SB to my son's 2016 SS Camaro. But I look for every opportunity to drive my car for the sheer fun it offers. But my history with Audis is a checkered one. The worst car I ever owned (I've had lots of cars) was a 1973 Audi 100. From the day I got it brand new, it burned a quart of oil every 400 miles. Then things got worse. I was spending more time in the Audi service center than I was driving that car. I traded that car in for an Oldsmobile 4 months later. On one of my trips to get the Olds serviced I ran into my salesman. He said "boy are we having trouble with your Audi". I didn't have a lot of sympathy. In 2012 I was on my 6th Lexus (mostly GS sedans and one SC430), when I started reading all these great reviews for Audi in C & D. So I thought, what the hell, go test drive one. Well the rest is history. Since 2012, my wife and I have owned the following Audis, 2012 A6, 2013 A5, 2015 A8, 2016 S5 Cab. My wife currently drives a 2017 A4 and I have the 2018 A5 SB, both Prestige models with all the bells & whistles. Like I said, I'm a car guy. So I tell friends the worst car I ever owned and the best car I ever owned were Audis. While the A8 and S5 Cab were terrific cars, I have to admit the 2018 SB is by far the most fun to drive. It's not one thing, it's the whole package. I'll probably keep this car for a few years but I'm intrigued by images and reviews of the 2019 A7. That might be the only car I'd consider trading my SB for. I know that all the car manufactures have made tremendous advances in recent years, but for me, Audi still makes the best overall car for the money.

Default fun to drive? not so much...

My 2001 E46 M3, now that car was fun to drive. My 2018 S5 Sportback is comfortable, quick and practical. It feels a little bit like my 2010 E92 M3 wearing a 400 pound overcoat.

I don't doubt there are Ms, AMGs, and quite a few Porsches that drive and handle better than the Audi A5 or S5. But I can only comment on cars I've test driven or owned. I'm sure going from a Lexus to an Audi has a lot to do with my feelings for Audis. But as I said, I look at the complete package and that includes interior fit/finish, ergonomics, technology, sound system, etc. I've read and watched numerous Utube reviews of the 2017 A4 and 2018 A5 SB and they match up pretty well with my own perceptions of those cars. For me, the A5 SB offers a great car for the price Audi charges. Now I can't say I wouldn't be blown away if I drove an RS5 or a BMW M3, but I don't think that's the kind of car I would buy. My wife had an S5 for a few months and I wasn't that impressed.
