So the tips on my 2022 RS5 started peeling at the inner edge, as I experienced on my prior 2019 RS5. -Pictures Below- 2019 then 2022
I figured Audi would have corrected whatever caused the issue by now, but I guess not. As the appearance was bound to only worsen, I pushed for Audi to replace these as well. After a bit of back and fourth Audi agreed to replace both tips on this car which involves replacing the entire rear half of the exhaust.
As this has happened to both of my RS5s, I am sure this is not an isolated problem. My question is: can anyone recommend a product for the tips that would prevent the same thing from happening to the new ones?
I had my quad tips treated with the same ceramic coating as the rest of the car and 6 years in, they still look great. My detailer said the tips do not get very hot as the gases that pass through have already had the temperatures reduced farther up the exhaust system, on their way back to the tips. Whatever — my tips show very little corrosion and any carbon build up on the inside and edges comes off with a squirt of Windex and a towel.
A also coated my tips when I first got the car with Gyeon Q2 Rim. I used it on my rims and since it is intended to be used on hotter surfaces I tried it on the tips. While I don’t have tons of miles on the car so far it hasn’t started peeling.
My 2019 and 2022 both started chipping as well (my 2022 tips I had ceramic coated). I'm not sure what the cause was and they started chipping after only 3-4k miles, so not much use. I did drive it through 2 winters though, so they were exposed to salt. Never used harsh cleaners or anything like that. I ended up cleaning them with some metal polish, degreased, masked them off and hit just the small areas with high heat paint (I think used for BBQ's). It was a black semi-gloss, and they came out almost perfect and never chipped again. I should have prefaced this by mentioning that Audi declined warranty coverage saying that it was normal wear and tear (BS). However I didn't even bother fighting it since I figured even new ones might do the same thing.
