I'm kind of surprised no one has created a CarPlay / Android Auto bridge device that plugs into the compatible USB port on the car and provides the needed WiFi link that the phone connects to.
Since carplay just mirrors whatever is on the screen to the MMI, I didn't see a point in having the phone clutter up the dashboard or center console like in my previous cars. I took a proclip mount and used some velcro to affix it to the underside of the armrest. Depending on which proclip mount you get, you might have to sand off the fuzzy material off the backside so the velcro can stick.
Another option for those that do not want to block a vent and don't mind giving up a cup holder, here is model from WeatherTech and like their floor mats, this product is very robust and well made. It is provided with several sleeves which allows you to find a perfect fit and accommodates any size phone with a sliding and locking carrier tray. It does sit in front of the climate controls, but swings forward easily yet firmly without upsetting the mount if you need access to the controls. Also, it is close to the front USB port which also allows connection through CarPlay. https://www.weathertech.com/cupfone/
I noticed that you have a black cable in the picture. Did you cover an apple cable or find a different alternative ?
It is a pricey Audi cable which I negotiated in my deal. Sold separately I think they want $120, but as you probably know you can get one on Amazon for about $7.

You can find the cable on eBay for sub-$30. That is what I did. It is also a legitimate cable, Audi P/N and all.
