We had a member when I first joined AW who removed his tips, blasted tge chrome off and then had them painted with a black satin finish (IIRC) paint that’s used on guns. The paint has to be baked after application. The final product was stone gorgeous!
The product is called Cerakote. It is amazing stuff and it can be totally DIY, as it can be bake-cured in your oven. Once you get the tips off, that is.

That was my issue; the tips are tack-welded on the top of the exhaust pipe. This requires dropping the pipes, un-welding the tips to remove them, do the coating and re-welding them and reinstalling the exhaust system.
Last year I dropped the exhaust from the last hanger/masked off car. Scuffed chrome with fine sand paper. Applied 2 coats of Rustolium self primer then 2 coats satin black. This is today, 5000? Miles later:
the darker spots are just water from wiping off the tip
Interesting thread. The BBQ-Paint and Gun-Paint are good ideas. Makes me wonder what "they" use to paint them originally? Maybe a performance shop has some crazy-good paint?
Probably not a popular idea, but I kinda just like un-painted alloy for things like this and even wheels. They are both so close to the ground, the heat, etc.
What is also interesting, and i know this only since my neighbour had a mk7 golf r (2016), and prior to my Audi I had a mk7.5 (2018), and my neighbours pre facelift tips were not welded on, the facelift suddenly had them welded on, I wonder if that is a common case for Audi and other manufacturers.
