Dave, regarding the dealer not wanting to do a transmission fluid change, you are correct, my dealer doesnt want to do it.
I also live in central NJ, have you found any private techs that are skilled in doing this?????
this place seems highly regarded. they have loaner cars available as well. https://www.google.com/search?rlz=1C...num=10&rldimm=[object%20Object]&ved=2ahUKEwjmusnd2dr5AhXahIkEHY96C2QQu9QIegQICBBT #rlfi=hd:;si:14343956555528834007;mv:[[40.970937073672346,-69.44683089344426],[37.973108400169814,-76.85710921375676]]

Thanks.
I do use this indy for my servicing, it's just that they even quoted me something close to $1k to do the trans fluid which i think is ridiculous.
Thanks.

Well the transmission pan (which needs to be replaced with each fluid change since the filter is built in) is $400 by itself. The Audi brand transmission fluid will be about another $400 (you can get the ZF brand for a little less, around $250 - $300). Add in labor and you're around $1000.

ask them if they will allow you to bring your own parts. if they allow that, just pay them for labor. it is worth a shot asking.
So Audi's maintenance guide doesn't specify the fluid change, they call it lifetime. But ZF, the manufacturer of the transmission, recommends I believe around 50-70k miles somewhere there, so you're at a good point to do it now. Someone else can chime in with more accurate cost and details, but I'd estimate maybe a few hundred, within $500 seems reasonable, the fluid itself is pretty expensive.
A horrible tactic - there’s no such thing as a lifetime fluid. Porsche similarly is the same with the coolant on their cars.
60-90k is what I would recommend. $500 is reasonable for sure considering a reputable shop.
Here's a picture of the inside of the tranny-pan, it almost looks like the filter is accessible underneath the panel? If it is not, how did the manufacturer place the filter in there?

@synergize — I’m guessing Audi just creates tge required specifications, puts it out to bid from a list of suppliers and then assigns a number of legal restrictions on those manufacturers not to sell any individual components, to instead sell it as an assembly only.
Not that it’s the right thing to do but if you had your transmission fail under a warranty but it was discovered non Audi-specific parts were even partially responsible for the failure I would think you’d be hosed.
ZF makes the 0D5 (8HP65A) transmission, not Audi. The plastic oil pan has always been that way since the 5HP (5-speed), according to the oil change instructions from ZF. Metal pan has separate filter unit, and is reused. Plastic pan has integrated filter unit, and is replaced. You'd have to ask ZF why they do it that way. I'm sure Audi had the option to go either pan spec; the 0B6 (6HP28AF) and 0BK (8HP55A) had metal pans. You can be sure the decision was made solely on cost/convenience to Audi AG.

Thanks for the replies (Smac, Nikon1), both make good sense. Here is the part (tranny pan) for as little as $76.00. https://www.autohausaz.com/pn/VW-0D5398010 Not bad at all, cheapest I've seen in this thread was $264^. Source some Liqui-Moly trans fluid for $9.00 a bottle and this is very doable and relatively inexpensive, less than $150 for parts. Just might snag one before the price goes up!
