Default "supafly" custom roof rack: $6 plus labor

Tip for you thrifty allroad owners:

I made a couple roof racks for the allroad a while back, and finally got around to posting pix. Took a 10-foot piece of 1 1/2" PVC pipe, four 90 degree elbows and some duct tape, and they should be able to handle up to 100 pounds or so (evenly distributed).

<img SRC="http://www.mnaudi.com/mymnaudi/images/837/RoofRackSide.jpg">

The only fabricating needed was to cut some slots in the bottom of the racks to keep them upright when bungeed down. Pretty self-explanatory I think.

The duct tape serves two purposes... 1) keeps the rack from scratching the rails on the car and/or the load I'm carrying, and 2) gives the racks that "ghetto-OEM" look.

Held in place by bungee straps. All told I put about six bucks into them -- they're 4 feet wide and the sides keep the load from wandering off in corners. Obviously if I was hauling sheetrock or something similar I'd need to unscrew the antenna, but that's simple enough to do.

I kinda like how they make the car look like it's sporting devil horns Next improvement, to make them collapsible so I can keep them in back w/o taking up the entire cargo area.

EDIT: These are for those "emergency times" that I haul crap that won't fit in the car, thought some others may want to do the same w/o buying the spendy OEM or thule, etc. bars, which are less useful than these bars for long loads (such as sheetrock or a couple 2x4's) as they need to attach in the "factory spots" -- right up front and then 2/3 of the way back on the rails. So don't be hatin' -- I'm just offering a cheap alternative. Jeez. ;-)

Default Suggestion

Now your pipes are open and in rain water can go into tubes. So I suggest you add tap to both pipes to drain them!

Default Re: Suggestion

Tape actually covers the holes at top except for the spots where the bungees go -- and I can always just tip 'em upside down. Haven't used them in rain yet -- so I may need to add taps yet! Thanks for the suggestion.

You drive a $45K car with a PVC pipe roofrack? What are you smoking?

Default Seems like just what is needed for oversized items that need to be brough a mile or two home...

...from Home Depot or Lowe's. Other than that right now, I have no need for a roof rack system.
