Default $1100 for an exhaust manifold sensor?

Hi Everyone,
My car is at the shop (again) and I'm being told it needs an exhaust temperature sensor that is located under the exhaust manifold. The quote is for 5 hours of labor, involving disassembly of the manifold. Does this sound right to anyone? What happens if I don't fix it?

i can't comment on the cost as that will vary across the country. as far as importance of said sensor, i can say that.

exhaust temp is what the ECU reads to measure rich or lean mixture output of the engine. being this is related to boost and countless other engine controls/functions, i would say it is important, yes.

i would recommend you consider trying an independent shop you can trust instead of a dealer (assuming you went to a dealer). hope this is of help.

the repair quoted is not accurate. you do not need to remove the manifold. the sensor is accessible. are they replacing both egt(exhaust gas temp) sensors or just the one? 5 hrs i assume would be for two, if thats for only one sensor, the dealer is being greedy. call around and see what other shops would quote you

Default egt sensor

you don't need to remove the manifold for that
about 2 hours per side is what it takes to replace each sensor
I recommend replacing both at the same time
they are used to inform the ecu of the turbo temperature, when they fail the ecu assumes the worst case and opens the wastegates to protect the turbos
around 600.00 parts and labor sounds fair

EGTs are expensive parts, approx $400.00ea (car has 2). Check and see if the quote is for both sensors. If it is, the price isn't out of line. If the quote is for 1 move on.

The only exhaust related part that needs to be removed is a heat shield over the exhaust manifold to get at the sensor (at least on the drivers side)
