I recently purchased an 02 Allroad that had been 6 speed swapped. The car has not shifted since the swap, which I knew. My question is since there are two different shifters for the car as well as two different shift rods do they have to match? Like if you have the old style shifter you should also have the older style shifter rods? Would mismatched components cause a car not to shift? Does anybody have any other ideas why it won't shift? The way it currently sits I can get it in what feels like 2nd and 4th but that's all. The shifter also sits cocked towards the driver's side in neutral. See pic for the lean and style of shifter.
I'd expect the manual transmission to use different connecting arms from the ones on an automatic. Can you shift into gears with the engine shut off? I once lost the ability to shift my OEM manual into gear with the engine running because the pilot bearing had failed. Who did the swap?

The previous owner did the swap. it will not shift on or off.
Can anybody answer if the transmission and linkage were out of say an 03 A6 but the shifter itself was maybe out of an 01 would they work together. According to the JH Motorsports site I have an early style shifter.
