Stammler just called and discovered the cause of the problem. The timing belt was loose and slipping causing the water pump to not be able to push enough pressure for heat. I bought the car two years ago (my third Allroad) and a records search showed that the belt had been changed at 75k miles. But it appears that they cheaped out and did not change the tensioner at the same time and this was one of the root causes of the slippage.

Wow, I guess having no heat was a blessing in disguise! Your lucky you caught the bad timing belt/tensioner before it destroyed your engine

Seams sketchy to me that the belt would actually slip with out ruining the engine or cause it to over heat.

If the belt advances as little as 3-4 degrees you can bend valves. If the water pump couldn't circulate enough coolant you would notice your temp gauge going up.

Usually no heat is from a clogged heater core or air in the lines. Either way I'm glad you now have heat.

DO you now have heat? If I am not mistaken, that timing belt is a toothed belt, which means if it "slips", it really jumped a tooth or tooths, and your car would then run like crap. Can anyone verify if the W-pump is geared to the belt also, or if it's friction-driven? Something STILL doesn't sound quite right...

The water pump is indeed driven by the timing belt, but it's driven by the smooth side not the toothed side.

Yes it the smooth side, i have seen water pumps completely seize up and the belt just glides right over like nothings wrong lol

Yes. I had heat from the moment I drove it away from the dealer. Great heat. Hot heat. Just the way that it used to be. So, doing the timing belt, tensioner and water pump seems to have solved the problem. I implicitly trust the dealer, been working with them since 1998, so I don't think that they are covering up anything.

What is the proper method to 'air out' or 'de burb' the coolant system?
