2.7T or 4.2?

Here is how I figure:
APR Chipped 2.7T & 4.2:
Figures are 91 and 93 octane programs
2.7T -- 307hp/366lb-ft 318hp/382lb-ft
4.2 -- 340hp/302lb-ft 352hp/312lb-ft
Not 100lbs of torque difference, more torque on the 2.7T, but more HP with 4.2...each plays a different role.
So sure you can add more stuff to the 2.7T to make it a Stage 2 which would maybe get you to chipped 4.2...Going Stage 3 or better on a 2.7T Tip is not worth it given the TC issues as Rallynut has proven - thats why he swaped to a 6spd.
I get it that the 2.7T is the modders choice, but the major modders generally have 6 SPDs with the allroad.

So exactly you figured wrong
You said a chipped 2.7t would only bring you up to the power of a 4.2, which it doesnt its way more. And I was comparing it to stock 4.2 so exactly as I said almost 100lbs of torque difference, yes 84lbs to be exact, and almost 20hp. And as I said chipped 4.2 still doesnt come close to the torque chipped. Anyone at the track (who doesnt own a BMW) will tell you torque numbers are more important than HP. So you figured wrong.

Huh?
Sorry - I am new to the allroad and don't understand. The only way to compare is mod to mod. I don't disagree the turbo has more torque and when pulling at speed torque is perferable (not off the line). Torque is also preferred in towing. There is a trade-off there.
I am not going to argue this to death. All I can say is that in my experience the 2.7T tip is weak. I got rid of my 2001 2.7T for that reason and got a 6spd. The 4.2 auto is a much better match and a different tranny. Unless your in altitude if you want the auto the 4.2 is the better overall. Thats my 2 cents. done.

I have a 4.2 and engine is only one aspect- the 4.2 has a timing chain with...
no scheduled maintenance, and no turbo lady to worry about. (flame vest now on) The 4.2 can use regular fuel as 91 is "recommended" for maximum performance. I've used 87 in ours, except with spirited mountain driving, and can't see any measurable difference in fuel economy. I would expect decreased performance to increase fuel consumption as CPU would enrich fuel/retard spark. As mentioned lots of instant torque and sweet sound. The 4.2 has a top mounted canister oil filter that can be changed from above the engine- I suck my oil out a la marine pump and can change the oil and filter with no mess and no removing belly pan or lying on my back. (9 qts)
Besides the engine the brakes are upgraded along with some nice interior features that are more likely to be found on the 4.2, although many could be ordered as options on 2.7 (not sure about heated steering wheel)
I think just about everything else is the same except maybe the wheels. 18" were OEM with twin spokes 17" as a no cost option.

Wow! Impressive list! You did a lot of research! Thank you!!...
These are more things than I ever thought could go bad on my car! I'll keep my fingers crossed and keep up with the preventive maintenance!
