Default 2001 Allroad transmission issue!

I have an 01 Allroad 2.7T and the transmission is acting up, the tranny does a hard downshift into 2nd gear all the time. Seems like it got worse to doing it every time now and seems harder downshift when braking. The rpms jump up a notch then back down a notch when going up a hill or sometimes level road. I have not changed the filter or transmission oil yet but plan to soon, should this be a serious concern? Or is the torque converter possibly going?

Sounds like it might be the dreaded Tiptronic torque converter issue.

Yikes ! Has it thrown any codes yet ? CEL or anything? If its a 2001 and never had a torque converter (Unlikely it would have made it this far) i would be concerned. I just had some reverse chatter issues and did the fluid and filter ---made a huge difference and problem went away. Sadly yours sounds serious.....

No codes yet I used vag-com and monitored the torque converter and output and all that nothing looms out of place not sure if there is some gunk in the 2nd gear or anything. I am going to try a transmission fluid and filter change in a week or so it has been doing this for a while maybe a year. Temp was at 65C torque converter stayed around 1.00 not sure what normal is. Is there some kind of manual for doing a tranny rebuild id rather do it my self if anything?

I wouldn't attempt a transmission rebuild from a DIY guide.

The way a transmission works, the converter has nothing to do with shift quality in any way. If its banging into second on decel that could be a sign of low fluid or badly worn fluid, or damage inside the trans. At this point try servicing the transmission, if it doesnt helps, its junk. This is why you service transmissions every 50k or so and not wait 100 some thousand miles and start having problems to suddenly do preventative maintenance.

We only put 6,000 miles on it since we bought it this is why I hate buying used cars a lot of people don't care about maintence going to see next week if fluid change fixes it

Without the correct tools, you will not be able to do it. There are specialized tools that you need to know how to use.

If you've never done this before, and are hoping to do it based on a technical book, i doubt you will be able to do it, or that the rebuild will last.
