Default 2001 AR -- does 140 amp Bosch Alternator fit?

Straightforward question.
In the 2001 allroad, does the 140 amp Bosch Alternator fit, or do you have to use the 120 amp Valeo? If the 140 amp Bosch is a direct bolt in replacement for the 2001 (and I can't see why it wouldn't be), it seems like a non-brainer. Anyone with any knowledge, insight or experience with this? Thanks.

Bosch makes a 120amp & 140amp, but Valeo does also. The Valeo 140 amp part number is 078-903-016-AC. The last time I checked, the connectors were the same. I prefer Valeo over Bosch, more so when when it comes reman units. If you get a reman unit, you have to give them the same brand back as the core.

when i did my alternator replacement back in may, the original oem unit was a 140 amp valeo, so that's what it got for a new oem replacement

the new p/n for it is 078-903-018-X

I wish there was a way to know ahead of time what was in the car before taking it apart to get at it. Most part searches for a 2001 tell you a 120amp Valeo. Clearly would prefer 140amp. maybe that's what's in already. Were Bosch alts used at all in 2001 ar's? If I order a reman 140 Valeo and there is a Bosch in the car, am I screwed with respect to the core charge? One problem is that there aren't a lot of local options so I may have to order over the 'net. I guess I'll need to check with where I get it and my mechanic.

And just so I'm clear, The Valeo 140 amp part number, 078-903-016-AC, will fit in the 2001 (searches usually put this as a 2003-2005 part).

Also trying to decide whether I need/want to do a timing belt service at the same time. It was done (w/water pumps, seals, etc.) about 48k miles ago. At the rate I'm going,I really don't have to do it for another 18 months or so. Maybe I'll just let my mechanic assess the condition of the belt when he's got it open.

Take off the belly pan and inspect the back of the alternator. It should say Bosch or Valeo on it.

The 078-903-016-AC is the OEM new part number. The 078-903-018-X listed by PaperToast is based off Audi's rebuilt part number system, which requires a core charge if the old one is not returned.

If you want a new Valeo 140 alternator, check these links:

Just tried this, and unfortunately, I can't a name on any part of the alternator that I can see.

From the picture on these pages and elsewhere, what I have kind of looks like the Valeo. I just went ahead and ordered one. Got it from Amazon. A little cheaper than the above and it will be here in 2 days. Also no core to worry about. See:

Good price. The alternator is not hard to replace IF you have a lift and something to support the engine. It comes out if you remove the passenger side lower engine mount bracket. It's a clear shot at the alternator once that's out.
