Default 245/50Z17 Dunlop SP Sport 5000 with 10K miles Hydroplaning like crazy?

I need to rotate the tires and they are getting pretty warn, 1/4 tread left, but they just started hydroplaning big time today in a good rain.

My wife complained about it yesterday and I blew it off but I ran out a few minutes ago to get an RX and it was right scary. They have always performed well in the rain why the sudden change?

Would it be more apt to hydroplane if the tires were low on air? They look OK but I will check the pressure tomorrow.

Thanks!

Default I hate those Dunlop SP Sport tires...

They were OEM on my Saab Viggen. They are junk IMO. Sucked in the rain - wear was so-so. I ditched them quickly. Haven't bought a Dunlop since - The M3 snows would be the only one I would consider now.

My bridgestone RE750 abruptly started to hydroplane around 10K, figured they are just wore out.

Default Once you get down to less than ~6/32nds of an inch of tread, risk of hydroplaning increases greatly

...even though the wear bars are at 2/32nds of inch, and law typically requires replacement at 3/32nds. If things are really dry, I'll go down to between 2/32nds and 3/32nds before replacing. If things are wet, I'll usually replace by the time I reach 4/32nds. This is on any tire. Without tread, you're going to hyroplane. Also, the wider the tire, the more likely it is to hydroplane, since the shape of the contact patch is wider and shorter, giving the rotation of the tires less time to evacuate water before using up the contact patch.
