Car finally stranded me.
Pulling into a parking spot near home the car would not move under power. Transmission will not engage any gear. Trans sounds like two cogs are just not quite engaging - a bad sound for sure but not horrific. failure occurred at 1 MPH at zero load.
So to answer those pondering this - I have lived with the torque converter MIL for 30,100 miles before complete failure.
Now to actually find someone that will fix it - don't say the dealer or you will be flogged.

service shop. Since the allroad is a pain in the *** they didn't want to tackle it. Neither did Hillsdale transmission.

I'm sure that there is a risk of some metal contamantion, but it could just be the pump and staiter blades... or splines...Still not good.
