One item seldom addressed is the fuel filter. You should change them even though there is no mention in a maint. book.
A clogged fuel filter ($25.00 easy DIY) can stress the fuel pump and if completely neglected it can kill the pump. The fuel pump is considerably more than $25.00 and not really an easy DIY.

I've wondered about that. Is the line not pressurized when the car is off?
I was always convinced it would be a somewhat involved job, on the basis that the line was presumably pressurized, resulting in fuel spraying everywhere. Sounds much easier than that though?

No pressure with the car off...
when you turn to on sometimes you can hear the pump pressurizing the line.
Like any fuel filter, there will be some gas inside it and it will leak out when you open the lines.
