Default Allroad in thick sand

Hello, I am considering getting either the Allroad or Toureg (have a 97 A4 bought new).
Some of my wife's friends take their 4x4's onto the beach and they can even get stuck. Has anyone here every taken their Allroad on the beach and how did it do?

Thanks in advance, Brian M.

Default Any vehicle has the capability to get stuck somewhere. Tricks for sand include...

lower tire pressure (~20psi), ESP off and watching where you're going.

Default I drove our allroad on the beach last summer.

We rented a beach house that was 7 miles up the beach. Tr0y is correct. Just lower your air pressure, raise the car, and turn off ESP. My brother had his Expedition as well, and I kept up with him.

In case you're wondering, I left the ESP on for a little while to see what would happen. Basically, the system was overwhelmed, and I had to stop the car, turn the engine off, and restart. I didn't realize the software was written by microsoft! ;-)

Default allroad does very well in sand, far better than my wife's MDX.

However, we still prefer to take the MDX to the beach since it has a beige interior which goes well with sand and our forever shedding yellow lab. I'm considering trading our MDX for a Touareg for better offroad capability.

Default Overwhelming ESP...

I think it was the heat, rather than the software that caused the ESP to be overwhelmed. =) All that braking has gotta cause some heat... unless you're in snow! =)

Default The problem is more than brake heat

The system keep cutting power regardless of throttle position. The car simply won't respond to your right foot which is a unusual and frustrating feeling.

Same thing happens if you try to left foot brake. The car just shuts down.

I'm sure ESP is working the brakes as well, but in sand it cuts power so much that there isn't much left to brake!

Default I experianced that as well - the power "modulation", if you will...

Definately have to shut that thing off for anything deep! =)
