update
I forgot that I started this thread. Just as an update, I went ahead and bought a set of Michelin Pilot Sport A/S tires. This series was being phased out and replaced by Pilot Sport A/S plus and I found a set at Tirerack for $125 a tire. We just got a considerable snowfall here in New England and they worked great.

I am running Yokahama Advan S4 and love them as an AS tire. They handled the Chicago snow and heat pretty well, and have good road feel. Check out the reviews on Tire Rack.
I added dedicated winter tires last season to help make sure that I kept the black side down on trips back to ME, VT, & NH for the holidays. Besides, they extend the life of my Yokohamas.

Great winter tires
Good tires cost so much less then body work. I put snows on every winter. For the last 10 years or so I have run nokian hakkapeliitta on everything. I have them on my Allroad,my wifes car and my daughters car.
We all have the same experience over and over. Arrive at our destination and everyone is talking about how slippery it is out there. Unless we saw another car sliding, we have no idea. The other two cars are FWD and the tires are great, on the Allroad they are incredible. The only problem, forget about sliding through the turns or doing donuts. Just not going to happen.
BTW I convinced a friend to put them on his A4. a couple months later he called me to say he had to stop quick behind an accident. He stopped and pulled over to let the car behind him slide into the car in front of him.
