Another vote for keeping the 628 relay

We just picked up a used 03 last week, and I'm already taking it apart.
Pulled the 628 servotronic relay last Friday since both my wife and I are not big fans of the soft steering effort plauging most Audis (we're used to BMW/Porsche steering). I had high hopes that this would do the trick.
The short story is, I just put it back in this morning after a 2 day trial. I love the extra stiffness when underway (5-25mph), but it's just too stiff to move quickly when navigating parking lots and backing out of our driveway onto the main road.
Also, as others have mentioned, the added stiffness doesn't really add any road feel, precision or self-centering force like in our 330zhp or Boxster. Without the relay, the feeling was just stiffer, and for me, not better.
I wish there were a way to reprogram the relay to provide just a little less boost at lower speeds (maybe 30-50%), and perhaps a more linear response in effort. Any gurus out there want to make a custom 628 for the Audiworld community?

I agree, it's personal taste (and it's a compromise either way). I think the 628 is fairly reasonable at highway speeds (anything over 50mph really). It's the low speed that drives me batty. Until Audi puts some more caster in their suspension design, self-centering and cornering-force proportional steering feel aren't going to happen.

there is a tech piece about turning the 628 off automatically when in TIP mode. Its a wire job but some find it great.
you can also install a dash switch to cut it out when you want.

It was made by a forum member "wild-blue-yonder" but I never installed it. If you are interested, I can send it to you. Shoot me an e-mail.

Her is more info about that mod...
