Default any other midnight drivers out there? (long)

I'm one of those people who loves driving for the sake of driving (ok, I'm a car nut!). I just came back from a great midnight drive - 30 minutes of winding roads near where I live. What a pleasure. I know the Allroad is meant to be a crossover, but it sure as hell feels like a sports car. Do any of you go for drives just for fun?

This is the 2nd time since I got this car that I have taken this particular route. For those in the Rockville MD area, take Muddy Branch Rd west to Travillah. Follow Travillah until Glen. Take a left into Glen. Follow that for about 8 miles of wonderful winding road. Turn right at the T-junction - another 3 miles of winding roads. Turn right into Glen Mill Rd. Left into Darnestown Rd, and back left into Muddy Branch rd to where you started. Watch our for deer!

About the car - the handling is great, the acceleration is excellent, and the brakes feel great to me (I know some folks have complained about them, but I love them).

Of the cars that I have owned recently (Subaru WRX, BMW M3), this is definitely the one I enjoy the most. It seems to have the best balance of sport, luxury, and utility of pretty much any car I have come accross. Not to mention that I love Audi's interior design. The quality of the materials is definitely better than BMW's, and they seem to have thought of everything.

Anyway, enough raving for one night. Good night and enjoy.

Default True confessions from Drivaholics Anonymous

My wife has always been able to tell by the look in my eye when I'm about to suggest some late-night errand as an excuse to go out. The allroad has exacerbated the problem -- last night I left Chicago at 9:30, got home (Minnesota) at about 3:15, and what was supposed to be a few blocks of turbo cool-down turned into fifteen minutes of tooling around just to get my fix. As enjoyable as the allroad is on the highway, distance cruising doesn't quite count as real driving.

Default I don't enjoy night drives on winding roads

I frequently go out for driving just for the fun of it. I almost always take the TT; because it is not leased (no milage worries), and a little more fun to drive than the allroad

Anyway, while waiting one of Turkey's world cup soccer games that was going to start at 2am; I decided to go for a drive in the middle of the night.

Well, unfortunately it turned out to be very tiring and not fun at all. There was some fog, worries of deer, and self-induced car-sickness. I am not kidding! I was able to make myself car-sick. I think the reason was that it was not visible in advance what direction the road was turning.

Morning drives are still great though. I sometimes take the long way to work, from Mountain View (CA) to Santa Clara: through Page Mill Road, 35, 9, etc.

Default Is there anything else but???

<center><img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/22227/beach_rear_2.jpg"></center><p>I am by far the most "odd man out" both in and out of my immediate circle of peers.

There is nothing I enjoy as much as driving at night, especially in the AR. I have a commuter car (2002 Golf TDI) and "touring" sedan (2000 5 series) but it's the allroad which intoxicates me most...

Is it the way it handles? Is it the super trouper way the Xenon lights change the road? Is it the hypnotic state of the red illumination from the center console? Maybe it's the superb sound coming from the Bose? Or perhaps it's the feeling you get having control over something bigger and more powerful than yourself? Whatever it may be I don't question, I simply let go and enjoy...

I am by "nature" a creature of the night - life for me doesn't begin until 2am... Come 10pm I get a second wind and nothing will satisfy me until I've gone for a long drive completely isolated from everyone. Thirty minutes is just not enough - you'll find me out for hours; 1am, 2am, 3am there is no limit - like any person suffering from an addiction, nothing will satisfy the craving until my "fix" has been fulfilled...

Santa Cruz to San Francisco, Monterey to Moro Bay, Los Angeles to Laguna you'll find allroadguy sometime after midnight enjoying earth-road-sky... allroad.

Default you are not alone dude

I'm also a night person, and although I don't generally drive around for hours every night, I often go for night drives. I'm also the odd man out both in and out of my circle of friends. Most of my friends have come to accept that I have a weakness for cars. I've really struggled to find the right car for me, and I know this is crazy, but I have never owned a car for more than 18 months - other than my wife's cars, which we owned for 3 years, and now another one for 2 years so far (she drives a 323Ci convertible auto - nice car). The E46 M3 convertible that I owned for a few months was probably the most extreme car I owned, but it was a completely emotional purchase without any logic attached to it, and I decided it wasn't worth the price after a few months (I have to start saving sometime instead of putting every cent into cars). The M3 was damn nice to drive, and extremely quick. But it was also very harsh for DC roads, and I truly believe I would have gotten myself into serious trouble with that car (trouble with the law, and possibly worse) because of how quickly you had to drive it to enjoy it, and how quickly and easily it got to insane speeds. So far, I really believe I have finally found the right car for me in the Allroad, but I can't swear to that yet because I know myself better than that.

As one of the other posters said - if they had a driveaholics anonymous, I would definitely be a member.

Cheers
