I just bought the used ABT front grill advertised in AW. I need to sand and repaint. Can I DIY the paint process using the spray kit or should I leave this to the pros?

Default I've repainted wheels and trim using the shaker can method. Just get good primer

and paint. I've used Wurth paint products with really good results. In fact, refinished my original twin spoke outer face and center caps this past winter with the Wurth silver and clear. Look great, and can be wet sanded and polished later too.

Default

If local body shop estimate is under $100, I'll let them do it otherwise I'll try the kit.

Default Was it lacquer paint, and clear? I know either lacquer, or enamel will lift the other if sprayed

over it. 1 is safe for spraying over both, but I can't recall which 1.

http://www.wurthusa.com/project/en/leftnavi/catalog/product.php?path=04.0240.jpg</a

Default Lacquer over the Enamel will lift the Enamel. If the enamel has broken edges or if the Lacquer

is put on real heavy (in a sense slowing the flash off time). So, if you spray on light coats it can be done (if no broken edges).

Also on a grille, I would personally use a rubber additive in the paint to help reduce chipping (leading edge scenerio).

Default Agreed. I put a couple of dry coats of lacquer sealer-primer on with very light sanding

between coats.... that has always worked well for me. But I also have a compressor and air brush to carefully apply primer if the shaker can doesn't work.

Default So you've been around long enough to see all the good safety changes

in the industry. I started painting back in the '70's just as Dupont was bringing Imron to the market. Used to paint with just a respirator and a fan to keep the fumes in control. Man, what I'd have given for today's downdraft climate controlled booths with ventilators. Still have an ancient Devilbiss spray gun that I use for simple things like painting a helmet or a suspension part.
