anyone have much experience with 18" winter tires?
I may find myself using 18" snow tires , and I'm wondering about the performance trade-off of 245/45-18 snows versus 225/55-17's. We're talking Blizzak LM-22's used to chase powder days in the Sierras: drive 3 hours on warm(ish) freeways to get to the snow and then drive around in several feet of snowfall. Think I'll notice reduced snow performance from the 20mm of added width? Any other drawbacks?

Dave you should be fine, I use my Michelin A/Ss and what realy gets you is the Slush.
if your traveling to fast. That will normaly happen going and coming at about 4500 ft level.
I do switch over to Winter onlys in late November so that I can get around, but that's because this is home, an I have them. Plus they are narrower and do not throug sand up on to the body like the wider tire do.

thanx. i was hoping you'd respond.
Sounds like the danger is slush-o-planing as I go past the snow line, but that traction on the cold packed stuff should be comparable.

I went through all last winter in Denver with 18" all seasons.
I was just fine. couldn't be as agressive in the snow as I would with 17" Snows, but otherwise I didn't have any problems.

So, did you go with the 18" snows?...
I'm thinking of that too, and going all around, 2 sets of OEM RS6 winter wheels (et20) from Clair parts. Thoughts? Experience?
