I need several 2 x 8 x 16 ft.
I have the standard roof rack with thule cross members. If I can find the dang keys and allen, I can spread those cross members as far apart as I can.
Anyone ever haul something that long?

I'm not sure that's a good idea, since only about 4 or 5 feet will be supported. I'm thinking you need to rent a trailer from U-Haul or rent the Home Depot pickup truck or something.....

I once did 16' in subaru outback. It was an older model and I didn't care for it at all (Worth maybe 1k total) so I had about 5 boards entering thru the trunk, most of the car and then sticking out the passenger window. Probably around 4-5 feet was sticking out from both sides.
It was scary though.

I've hauled a few 16' decking boards (5/4 x 6). I expect 2x8's would be a bit heavier though. I don't have roof rack cross bars, so I "made" some out of 2x4. I didn't have to go far or fast (few miles from HD).

I've hauled an 18' kayak and a 14' kayak at the same time, loaded up with camping gear. 5 sheets of 1/2" plywood, 16' 2x6s, whatever. You just have to be a little careful. Drive nice, you know what I mean?
The trick with several pieces of long lumber is securing it so the pieces that aren't touching the tie-down straps (interior part of the stack) won't slide out if you have to hit the brakes. If you can get them to wrap some of that sticky pallet plastic around them end-to-end, you should be fine. Or band them tight so they can't come loose.
Just putting straps over the pile won't hold them well enough, and it's a little creepy when you have to stop and the load isn't sure if it's going to stop at the same time.

you should be fine as long as you tie those suckers down really good and dont drive like a maniac.
and if you go that route, def shoot some pics, always fun to see the stuff that you can carry in a car.
i dont have cross bars yet, but i managed to carry a pallet on the rails one night.
having bungee cords in the car are always handy.

You guys are cracking me up!
Kayacks and 20' pieces of aluminum? I love it!
The best one was getting a speeding ticket while hauling the precarious load.
The local lumber yard said they'd deliver for free. I don't know if that's their policy, or a favor because I asked the owner's son, whom I play golf with. I don't think I should question it ... just place the order!
