ar clutch failure: Final Word: Covered - all new parts
I wanted to update the list as to my issues with my 2003 ar/6sp. As you may recall I was battling with the dealer over a destroyed clutch mechanism.
After 3 weeks of wrangling, I got the dealer/Audi to cover the entire thing. The original quote was $3200, supposedly my fault due to a roasted clutch.
Thanks to the advice and referrals given here, I was able to convince the dealer that they were in error, and to get the regional/factory reps to come out and back me up. They are replacing the entire clutch assembly (flywheel, disc, pressure plate and throwout bearing) with new parts under warranty.
Cool...
Many thanks to those who helped me with info and generous offers of parts. Special thanks to Matrix-Integrated here in Portland (Jeremy) who was generous with his time and perspective. I think the straw that tipped it my way was the fact that the throwout bearing was showing damage that could not have been heat related, as well as the fact that the clutch friction disk showed no abnormal wear at all. It was within spec, and the dealer mechanics agreed. The facts just didn't add up.
I wrote a long-long email to the dealer service manager (which I won't bother to bore you all with) describing every issue in detail, putting it on him to make it right. If anyone needs to refer to it, I am happy to share via email.
The short story is this: Audi will try everything to not pay up, including lying, changing their story, and ignoring facts that don't support their argument. (Especially the Audi Customer Care people.. you would not believe some of the things they tried to tell me) I recalled every one, and made them face up, and they eventually did.
I do need to make sure and thank the persistence of the local dealer's service manager. He did really try to make this work for me.
Why it took 3 weeks of persistent cajoling is still a mystery. This should be a premium product. It is too bad Audi doesn't think that way.
