And the name has also been applied by the auto-press to little cars like the Matrix, etc...
Seems like it's a really broad catagory designed to classify anything not designed purely for paved roads, yet not looking like an SUV.
But I agree, the only credit Audi deserves for it's contribution to non-SUVdom is the excellence of its products... and certainly not for having invented the non-SUV.

Buick V6 w/ a 3 speed and plenty of torque. Pretty much a CJ-8 w/ slightly different body. Great vehicle especially for it's time. Too bad they rusted so badly.
We had a few Wagoneer/Cherokees as well.

with the 33" tires it was not all that bad. I did however hit the skid pads on really steep incline that was followed by a nasty drop off.

I owned an AMC Eagle for years. Push button 4wd that actually worked, leather, power everything, alloy wheels. That car went for $18K in the mid 80's.
Best part was that it was a Jeep, and parts were cheap and easy to find.
Worst part was the fit and finish. Parts kept falling off, AC eventually inop, etc. But... my wife drove it and absolutely loved it. Her driving style was, and still is - the shortest distance from point A to B is a straight line, regardless of where the roads go. I have never seen a car that could take so much abuse.
I sold it, much to my wifes dissapointment, and it eventually met it's maker jumping sand dunes on the Core Banks off the coast of North Carolina.
In retrospect, I would love to still have it in the garage next to my allroad.
