I just purchase the Audi roof rack for my 2001 allroad. I also checked out Yakima and Thule solutions as well. With the 10% off coupon I had from my dealer and the fact that they hand delivered it to my house made it pretty attractive.
Now that I've received and installed it, the unit appears to be a 100% Thule rack and at lower cost, especially since it includes the locks as well. This has to be the only Audi part that is cheaper than an aftermarket solution. It makes sense that it is a Thule since the Audi cargo box is a Thule design as well.
The only draw back to this design I've found (same for the Thule Aero bars too) is that you cannot install the wind fairing and a cargo box at the same time. The way the fairing attaches would not allow the cargo box to mount in contact with the cross bars. I guess that it why Audi does not sell a fairing.
The wind noise with just the rack is minimal. On the freeway, if I close the sunroof cover, the sound goes away. I haven't tried it with the cargo box yet.
Bottom line is that it is a very high quality and secure unit. It fits perfectly and you cannot go wrong with it. I have a trip coming up to Utah (I'm in Colorado Springs) next month so we'll see how everything works when the rack is fully loaded up. I will be interesting to see the impact to gas mileage too.
