Automatic or Manual

to me the 6-speed seems out of place in a 4,200 pound wagon. Also, I moved to the city upon getting the car.
The Tip is great and the performance loss is very minimal (0.3 seconds 0-60), and that assumes the 6-speed driver shifts perfectly.

i agree to some extent. the 6sp is faster and performs better, but the tip is nice to drive. we have an a4 5speed and the ar is tip, makes it handy if there is an injury, or if you dont feel like driving a stick. I would recommend driving them both. you will quickly see which way you want to go with little hessitation.
either way is a win, the car is too much fun to pass up
good luck

because I live and work in Fairfield County, CT, which is not far from New York City. The traffic congestion makes the roads around here the world's largest parking lot at times. I went for the tip because I hate manual shifting in heavy traffic.
There have been reports of "tranny lag" with the tip and I experienced it myself occasionally until my recent 10K service when we think they may have cleared the memory in the tranmission control module. Other than that I think it is a very good set up and I love the tip shifters on my steering wheel.

......if I did most of my driving in the city with all the stop & go traffic then I'd probably opt for the tip. Since I live in the mountains, the 6sp makes more sense for me, besides I've never owned a car with an auto. The manual is better in the snow and for going down those steep mountain roads, saves wear on the brakes. Manuals generally perform better and get better mileage than autos, too.

Dogs can fly.

I was turning left from the center lane of traffic in fairly heavy traffic. Saw an opening, stepped on the gas pedal and the car just sat there for 2-3 seconds before it moved at all. I was almost T-Boned by a Maxima!
The transmission delay in the tiptronic is downright dangerous. I wouldn't get this transmission in this car again for all the tea in china!

I have never been a fan of automatics, and even in city traffic shifting is second nature, there is no thought procces, it just happens.
It is not as smooth as a BMW Getrag, but then again nothing else is. In closing, 6speed 6speed 6speed..
ps- you will never hear me complain about Turbo Lag, there is none with the manual....

Get a 6 speed.
I tried an A-6 with a tip before I got my 6 speed, and immediately noticed the tip lag.
Over a year and a half later, I'm still very happy with the manual

6-6-6 speed!! <devlish grin> I do a fair amount of highway driving daily between Providence and Boston, which means a combo of open roads and stop-and-go traffic (55 miles each way between work and home). To be honest, I don't even notice that I'm shifting a lot when traffic bogs down; but I REALLY notice I'm shifting when the highway's wide open and I want to MOVE!!! No doubt, the tip is nice--I drove both versions when I was looking to buy my allroad a few weeks back. But the 6-spd gives the car a totally different feel. Yes, the allroad is a heavy wagon, and no, you can't sling it around like an S4. But you'll come closer to its true sporting nature with a stick than with an automatic. Just my $.02. And either way, you're gonna love the car.
