This will make some people squirm.
I was quoted $900 to fix a torn boot a year ago. Can you believe that?
I bought an entire axle from partsgeek for $100. So far I've had zero issue. It was easy enough to replace ... I figure even if it doesn't hold up as long as a "real" axle, for another $100 I get a few more years and will still be way ahead, as compared to spending many hundreds.

You think?! Also at this place ...
I brought it in because they are an audi specialty shop and was hoping for a really good place to stick with to get my car back to health. The first problem was the check engine light (torque converter). After looking at it, they told me it was low on transmission fluid (leak) and that fixing the leak and refilling would most likely solve the problem. So I had them replace the output seal. They found the torn boot and assured me (hard sell, for sure!) that it could not be repaired and quoted $900 to replace the outer c.v. There was nothing wrong with the c.v. (yet), mind you. I picked the car up that night. The light came back on before I made it a single mile.
I called the next morning and had to endure the insult of being told the repair made was for the leak and was never intended to fix the light. ugh. That was *NOT* the conversation I had with the tech!
I did not return.

I forgot to mention that at the same time, I had a leaky front and they quoted me $2k. It was that next week that I hit my breaking point and decided to take over all maintenance of my car. This way I can't be cheated. And if I screw my car up, I have only myself to blame. I know I take far more care to get it right during repairs than they ever did. Heck, I even put the screws back in that hold the skid plate on.... what's left of them, anyway. hacks.
