5 years and 48K miles on the original battery -- Probably time to swap it out? Running fine, but why wait to get stuck?
Also, after reading Paulroad's DYI, how necessary is the trickle charger? I know it's keeping the electronics alive -- is the any danger beside losing radio presets?

I am exactly in the same boat as you? I typically change out the battery in other cars that I have owned between 3-4 years. In my wifes prev car, it was just a little over 3 years when it died. We were in Vermont (Not too cold) and it just would not hold a charge. (No warning)
I may do mine this winter.

the freeze takes the life out of them and motors need more power to "wake up" in the cold morning temps.
If you are on borrowed time with a 5 year old, then the preventive measure is to do it while its warm out.
Some will say you won't loose anything during a battery change and no trickle charger. I had one hands so I used it. I'd probably do it without like most people and shops do, if I din't have one. But, I would make sure I have the radio code just in case.

I have a Deka in my 1990 Nissan Maxima, and I have to trade it in every year for a new one because it would die after about a year and it wouldn't charge back up again. So, I'm not a big fan of Deka. No wonder it has a 8 year no questions ask warranty.

3 year battery for basically same price as OEM. OEM has only 1 year warranty then prorated.
IIFC the Duralast has a different vent location?
Thoughts on the Sears Die Hard Line?
Any other suggestions?
Pricing so far --
Deka ~$100 (based on Paulroad's post last year)
Duralst $138
OEM via Carson $138
All things considered, I may go OEM. The original lasted 5 years and while warranty is not as good, it is plug and play.

extension to connect the allroad's side vent hose to the battery's center vent. Works fine easy to do. Price has gone way up, IIRC I paid less than $80.00 for a group 49 battery.
