Default Battery size

Just curious... I don't need one yet but I looked up a new battery for my 2002 allroad in several automotive battery catalogs. I came up with conflicting results. I have seen Group 49, Group 41 and even Group 95R (reverse terminal).

I didn't measure but a quick look under the cowl cover lead me to believe the OEM battery is about a Group 49.

Does anyone know for sure what group size is required? Has anyone successfully replaced their battery with an Optima red top?

Thanks.

Default I considered an Optima but only an OEM Audi battery will fit without modding the

tray and/or tie downs. There does not seem to be any group # that is a perfect direct fit. STFA as some have modified their hold downs.

Default I bought an Interstate, and the hold-down piece adjusted to fit (link)

Seems odd that Audi wouldn't use some standard BCI size battery. I guess that is a US spec. I'll measure mine when I get a chance and see what is closest.

Thanks for the info.

Default Not true. Various batteries will fit, including the Interstate MTP91 and larger MTP93

I changed mine in the parking lot of the local Interstate battery store in about 5 minutes. I got the MTP91, but the MTP93 is higher capacity and will fit as well.

Just make sure to get the vent kit to adapter the center vent to the side.

I am sure that other places sell batteries that fit as well. The same size batteries are used in various VW, BMWs and MBs.

Default I guess I stand corrected. I couldn't find one that was a direct fit. Actually the vent mod still

means it isn't a perfect fit. I got an OEM for $126 (good price) so I just went with it.

Steve,

Thanks. I looked at the Interstate catalog and the MTP91 is a group 48 and the MTP93 is a group 49. Advance Auto sells a group 49 (it is made by Johnson Controls) for $60. It has a 3 year full replacement warranty and a 100 mo. pro rated.

Most Advanced Autos stock both the group 48 and 49. I just put one of these in my wifes Jaguar a couple of months ago and it has been working well (for a fraction of the cost of a Jag sourced battery).

Default Yes, I'm told that the Interstate is also made by Johnson Controls

It also carries the same warranty, but is more expensive.

Unfortunately, most places will tell you that they don't have a battery that fits IME, including my local Advanced Auto parts. I was in a big hurry to get the battery, so I just went with the first place close to me that said they had one that fit. After looking at two stores that told me they didn't have anything for the newer Audis, I found that both did. Oh well...
