I'm looking for a bike rack for my allroad. I need to carry two mtn bikes on the back (if they are on top I know that will be a (low clearance) accident just waiting to happen). I've used a hitch mounted rack on previous vehicles but it doesn't sound like a hitch is likely in the near term. Any info would be appreciated.

Sounds as if you are partial to the rear mount, but I have 3 mounts on the roof (Thule) and have no problem with Clearance. I think roof mounts are real secure...so I am biased

Based on the photos people posted - hitch mounts usually go into the socket, rather than connecting to the ball (at least mine is like that)

if you choose fork mounts the profile will be relatively low. Choose upright for kids bikes. Anything you attach to the back will ultimately scratch the paint and obviously the allroad hitch won't work with conventional hitch mounts and although there is a unit that attaches to a ball it requires straps on your tailgate. Choose Yakima or Thule and fork mounts currently the best are steelheads (cast stainless mechanism) Then, carry a roll of saran wrap and wrap your handlebars and seat to keep the dead bugs down(if you live in that part of the world). Throw the saran wrap away when you get to where you are going.

They used to sell a magnetic sign that folds down with air pressure and springs up when you stop. Maybe that would help !
I usually just sitr in the car going "bikes on the roof ... bikes on the roof ... " for the whole trip.
Haven't smashed my Kestrel yet.

I took this closeup pic of my Yakima DoubleCross tower a couple months ago. The crud is salt and other road grime from a recent snowboarding trip. I have both the Yakima Rocket Box as well as a pair of old (over 10 years) fork mount mountain bike holders. This system is great.
The DoubleCross towers grip the roof rails with plenty of force to remain sturdy even at triple digit speeds yet only soft rubber actually touches the allroad's rails thus leaving no marks or permanent evidence of a rack's installation.
When I put a bike on the car I leave an object blocking the entrance to the garage so that I will remember to stop before pulling in with bikes on top.
