Blue smoke on startup

Just test drove a 2001 allroad with 70K on the odometer. Car was well used, dirty inside, a bit scraped outside. Looks like it will clean up okay.
However, the car gave a pretty good puff of blue smoke on startup. This would suggest something amiss - either rings or valves, right?
Shouldn't be doing this at 70K, I don't think.
Used car dealer's asking $22K for the car. I think I'll pass.

you plan on doing MAJOR engine mods anyway (big turbos with new cams, pistons, etc.) At that point you could fix the oil burning while you were in there anyway.

while washing the car yesterday noticed a lot of carbon buildup on the insides of my tailpipes, also when starting the car smells like its running awfully rich---common? uncommon? cause for concern? anybody? (03 2.7T with 7500 miles)
Thanks.
Thanks.

they run super rich at startup, and the black soot is from running at WOT when the computer again decides to protect itself and run really rich to avoid detonation. You should see the pipes on my Prelude, looks like someone sprinkled Kingsford charcoal in there.
Blue is definitely oil.
