Default both key fobs stopped working

Hi there,

Both of my key fobs stopped working yesterday on a road trip. We recently adopted a puppy and we left her in the car with the car running so she would stay cool in the heat and locked the car with the other key manually while we went in to a store for a little bit.

I've tried both the simple procedure from the Owners Manual (press button and then manually lock the car at the exterior driver door) and the slightly more "advanced" procedure (using both keys, turn ignition on (w/o starting engine) and then manually lock with other key, then hold both buttons for 5 sec). When trying the second procedure, the flashers illuminate for a brief moment, but the horn doesn't honk and it doesn't work.

Any help is much appreciated! Thanks, David

I replaced both batteries with brand new ones at radio shack and tried both procedures for resetting them to no avail. Any other ideas?

If they both quit at the same time, seems to me the problem has to be on the receiving end - like an antenna that came unplugged or a circuit that's dead.

Not sure how it might be related, but first thing that came to mind is the interior motion sensor. Did you disable that before you left the dog in there?

Also, did you just do the re-recognition programming in the manual or did you do the full programming:

The previous FAQ entry on this item had some mistakes (and it confused the hell out of me) so I decided to make it a bit more user-friendly and add a few tips and pointers.

I'd imagine these directions will work on any A4/S4 with the "switchblade" keys. If you own a TT, A6, or A8 with these keys, try and see if the directions below work, and e-mail me your results.

These directions will allow you to reprogram your remote-control "switchblade" keys to full functionality. The '00 S4 manual claims that if you press the buttons too many times outside the range of the car, the key will deprogram itself. I don't know the reasoning behind this.

You will need BOTH of your "switchblade" keys to reprogram one or both of them.

1. Take the key you DO NOT want to program and put it in the ignition. Turn it one click forward.
2. Close and lock the drivers door with the second key.
3. On the second key (the one in the drivers door) press the 'UNLOCK' button ONCE only. The lights will flash on the car, but the doors will remain locked
4. With the second key still in the drivers door, unlock then lock the door again.
5. Pull the key from the slot and test remote functions.
6. Open drivers door, remove key from ignition.

If both of your remotes don't work, do the above for the first key, but on step #3, press the 'UNLOCK' button twice. The lights will flash twice, then continue on with step #4.

I used those instructions to program a new uncut ebay key for my allroad. I had to have a locksmith cut and program it to my immobilizer, but I programmed the key fob to lock and unlock the doors.

Here is where I got my keys and button pads if anyone is interested. Overall, it was a pretty good deal as I was trying to get a spare key as cheap as possible.

If you don't mind...what did it run you to get the work done from the locksmith?
