can someone explain the difference between a window regulator and the window motor?
is the regulator the black plastic thing that the motor attaches to or the thing with the cables in that attach to the window and move the window up and down?
i had a broken rear drivers side window guide and after replacement window will sometimes not go all the way up(stop for a few seconds and then goes back down a couple of inches, this problem started when guide broke and replacing guide didn't fix it)

I think the safety sensor is engaging..
like if you put your arm in..the window catches and goes back down? There is something not aligned right in the track that is binding as the window goes up..too much resistance.

that's what i thought, i had the window out and lubed the tracks up good, also sprayed crc lube on
braided metal cables that raise and lower window. the window opens and closes at the same speed as passenger side and seems to have the same load(sounds the same as passenger side when going up and down)
i was thinking that the broken guide damaged the safety release thing somehow, that is why i am trying to figure out which part is the motor and which part is the regulator. also what part has the safety release thing in it.

i just went out and tried lowering and raising the front 2 window together.
the 1st 3 times they both opened and closed all the way, but after 3rd try the driver's side would not go all the way up. seems maybe like after motor heats up the safety sensor gets too sensitive?(guessing) if motor from other side would work(which i don't think it will by part #), i would swap sides.

Regulator id the part with the cables that drives the window
Motor is obviously motor. The regulators are a long standing VAG problem. Semi pain in the *** to fix. Frequently the cables get kinked and start to tangle intermittantly. Eventually they knot and no more movement. Order one now, you will need it.

i was a bit confused, i had heard of window regulator and window motor. when i had window apart i
saw a shiney motor attached to a black plastic part with electric wire harness going into it, then the white thing(now know it's regulator) with cables coming out of it. have you ever had a motor apart? it seems like safety sensor is set too sensitive, wondering if it can be adjusted somehow.
when the rear window guide was broke the window would stick and i would pull up on it to help close it, guess i could have damaged the motor that way. : )

Window regulator and door window, removing and installing
1 - Door component carrier
2 - Window regulator
3 - Mount
4 - Torx bolt
5 - Pop rivet
Install rivets using VAG1753 pop rivet pliers in order: a,b,c,d and e.
Diameter of rivets a,b,c,d : 4.8 mm
Diameter of rivet e : 6.0 mm
6 - Door window
Removing:
- Run window down to bottom position.
- Remove door component carrier.
- Before removing, mark longitudinal position of window at both mounts -3- using felt-tip pen.
- Remove bolts -4-.
- Lift window out of mount -3-.
Installing:
- Install in reverse order of removal.
- Insert window into window regulator and align with markings applied before removing.
- Tighten bolts -4- to 4.5 Nm (40 in. lb).
Installing a new window:
Door component carrier removed
- To install, insert window into guide and push it back toward B-pillar as far as it will go.
- Move window upward as far as stop using window regulator without bolt -4-.
- Close mount -3- and tighten bolts -4- to 4.5 Nm (40 in. lb).

You can turn off pinch gaurd with vag, to see if that does it but
there is no real sensor that I have seen. The controller use the load on the motor to determine what is happening.I done a dozen of these. The regulators are crap. VW had a recall on them. I believe they changed the design. But they still bunch up.
