Default Changed tires tonight...saw lots of grease around inner CV joint. Uh oh!

I noticed the left front inner CV joint had slung a lot of grease around. Color was a light brown. I took a picture before cleaning up the mess.

I notice the grease seemed to have leaked out of a small pin hole in the boot. You can see it in the image where I've wiped the grease away. The "hole" is on the smallest diameter rib of the boot at the 1 o'clock position. It just happened to be facing up when I parked for the wheel change.

Does anybody know if the CV joint can be filled with a grease gun and needle? Does the dealer "service" it that way during normal maintenance inspection? Via that hole in the boot? (Is it really a hole?)

The right side was similar, had a small hole at the same spot, but not so much grease was flung around.

Can somebody who has taken the boot off please confirm if that's a hole in the boot?

Default There are no holes in the boots. You need to get the boot replaced.

very rare an innner boot goes.

Default This LF outer CV boot thing seems to be a new recent trend.

Why is it the left one and not the right? Dealer has rarely replaced a right outer.

Default Trend which AoA is now calling 'wear' not 'defect'.

My dealer said they quit reimbursing him for CV boots.

Default Good thing 2 months ago my dealer covered it. But wouldn't do a full CV Joint.

Covered under the 4/50 don't know about Assured, not there yet.

Default You're right, Xtreetoes & Ed, it is the outer CV joint.

This joint is where the left half shalf goes into the left front wheel's CV joint. (Not the inner CV at the Diff.)

The boot is not "obviously" torn or broken anywhere. And the grease build-up on the boot was kind of piled up around that little dot in the picture on the smallest donut. That's why I thought for sure it was a hole for grease to go in. But I admit I couldn't get any more grease to squeeze out. Maybe it is just a dimple from where the injection point is where they squeeze in the rubber when they manufactured the boot at the factory.

The rest of the grease was slung around onto control arms and such.

There is NO WAY this could be claimed as a "wear item" and be exempt from warranty coverage. I'm looking at only 20Kmiles and only 2 years since delivery. That, my friends, is a reliability PROBLEM. Not a wear item. My '96 Jeep Grand Cherokee ran 7 years and 100K miles on a non-serviceable CV joint on the drive shaft with no problems. I never saw a dab of grease come out of it.

They'll prolly cover it under the 50k warranty; I think it's Audi Assured where they're not.
