The directionals are working fine but I'm getting an intermittent clicking noise coming from the steering column. Any ideas as to what it can be?

I asked my dealer about the clicking noise. I was told that the numerous wires inside the steering wheel column (radio controls, airbag, heated steering wheel) are enclosed in a long flexible spring. The noise is the spring flexing or rubbing up against the inside of the steering column. I imagine the spring could wear out from flexing and become a problem.

The dealer probably said it was normal b/c it's a very tedious and time consuming repair. They have to dismantle the entire steering column to get at it. Had mine replaced on my previous '01 A6. It's also fairly difficult to get the steering wheel placed back on the column in a completely straight position. They had to do it on the allignment machine.

I get random (as far as I can tell) and intermittent series of clicks that sound like the turn signal on hyperdrive. I think this tends to occur mainly when the climate control is being heavily used, but I haven't verified. When I took it to the dealer, no clicking sounds occurred (of course) and so the service rep said he wouldn't be able to help me.
I think I'll try bringing in the postings on this thread this afternoon...
