COIL PACK

COIL PACK
My car was running rough so I hooked up to the trusty VAG and have a bad misfire in cyl 1.
Also, a multiple misfire code.
Blinking CEL
From a quick search - I assume I have a bad coil pack.
What the devil is the coil pack? Couldn't find a description in the search.
I hate to be an idiot - because everyone talks like they know what it is. Do a search on "coil pack" and I get 15 pages of symptoms and replacements - but no description.
Where is it and what does it look like?
Part #?
Can someone give me a little insight?
Thanks,
Jeb

In the old days...
you had a coil hooked to the distributor which had one wire to each cylinder.
Now the single coil along with the mechnical distributor as we knew it, is gone. The individual spark wires are now attached to a COIL PACK for each cylinder.
Open up the plastic cover and you will see one coil pack sitting in each cyl.

In this photo, the four red "squares" on the right are the tops of the coil packs.
Don't feel bad. I had no clue what they were, what they looked like, where they were located, or how many there were on a car until my first one went!

Jeb, cyl 1 is the closest to the front of car passenger side
(on a 2.7T car)
easiest to get to and change yourself..
If you were anywhere near me (central Mass) I would change it for you

Difference between latest "R version" and Hitachi coilpack "E"?
Is R for 2.7T and E for a different engine?
Or the same but different fir (bolt vs friction)?
Or perhaps R version is updated and replaces E?
(Maybe R=Robust and E=Emergency pending... )
Sorry for the silly question, but much easier to ask the forum than remove my plastic covers and see what version I already have... (plus others can search this later, as my search was inconclusive for 2.7T engine)
"Latest "R" version. THIS ITEM IS NOW ON ALLOCATION FROM AUDI USA. WHEN ORDERING THIS ITEM THE VIN NUMBER OF THE VEHICLE MUST BE SUPPLIED IN THE COMMENT SECTION OF THE ORDER FORM OR THE ORDER WILL BE VOIDED. THE AMOUNT ORDERED CANNOT BE MORE THAN THE NUMBER REQUIRED FOR THE ENGINE SIZE OF THAT VEHICLE. THIS ITEM MAY BE DELAYED IN SHIPPING UNTIL AUDI USA FILLS THE ALLOCATION OF YOUR ORDER. OTHER RESTRICTIONS MAY APPLY."
"HITACHI "E" COIL PACK. COIL PACK SEAL EXTRA. COMPARE YOUR CURRENT VERSION NUMBER TO ENSURE COMPATABILITY."<ul><li><a href="http://www.audipartssuperstore.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=23_36_76">'03 and '04 A6 lists both</a></li></ul>

"J" was the version just installed on my car last week (a 4.2). They were orange/red, not black.
