Now that I have to be even more of a tire fanatic about cold air pressures, I was wondeing if anyone had any experience with the 5 gal portable air tanks you can buy at an auto parts store ($20) versus a $99+ air compressors that are used to run air tools, etc.
I was wondering if you have the portable tank, if they hold enough air to top up the tires.
Thanks for the suggestions.

air station that will supply you with enough pressure for the entire day of racin. Some don't have enough pressure, so it equalizes, not giving you a whole hell of alot of air.. Some will allow you to pump 120+ psi into that bad boy..

Since I do allot of racing, the best deal going is go to a local fire station and ask them if they have any fire bottles for sale. They usually replace them every so often. Donate a few $$$ to them each time you have it filled up (it takes a 4 stage compressor). You will need a good regulator to deal with 2200psi, but then you will be able to fill tires for a year, or allow the use of an impact gun. Air tools do drain the tank due to the volume of air used. But I can not only fill many dozens of porous race tires, I can make about 10 set of wheel changes before needing a refill.

SCUBA tanks can be filled to greater than 3000 psi and thus become a potential hazard (i.e. a bomb) for the uninitiated. I have included some links to web articles that discuss these dangers.

I've used a portable tank for over 15 years, and short of having a real compressor, it's the best. I have one of those cheaper compressors, and it takes way too long to "top off the air" in a tire. So I use the cheap compressor to fill up my tank, and then I can quickly fill many tires and the tank is portable. Just my experience
