Default Consensus: What size replacement tire for OEM 17's

The shortlist is down to either the SO3's or Pilot Sport A/S's ... do I take Tirerack's size recommendations or not?

Easy answer 245 x 50 x 17" -- several mfg's offer this size. . .

Default Better answer: 225/55/17 if buying S03s, 245/50/17 if buying Pilot Sport A/Ss...

Because those come closest to being the correct outside diameters. (Revs/Mile are 776 stock - comparing against that is more accurate than comparing against the stock 26.8" diameter.)

If looking at other makes/models of tires, look at the outside diameter (in Revs/Mile), the rim width range for that tire, and decide what would fit best. Lots of pertinent info in the manufacturer spec page for a tire. =)

Default Most of us would like a bit lower profile tire with stiffer sidewalls --

The 245 x 50 x 17" Pilot Sport A/S gives improved handling to the ar. Having said that the S03 is not a hybrid tire (not all season like the Sport A/S) and may also be an improvement. But, hey, almost anything is better than the OEM tires.

Default Deed is done, reports to follow

Thanks guys, just ordered SO3's in the size itacud suggested. After a little while I'll post my impressions. I hope the reports of tramlining have been a little exaggerated, but time'll tell.

Default How do you define "lower profile with stiffer sidewalls"? The S03 (in mentioned size) has stiffer...

sidewalls than the Pilot Sport A/S! =)

The sidewall height is the same for the S03 in 225/55/17 as the Pilot Sport A/S in 245/50/17. The S03 is legendary for having stiff sidewalls - certainly more so than an ultra high perf A/S tire. So equal height, stiffer sidewalls means an overall stiffer tire with less roll, and quicker turn in response. That combined with sticker max perf summer rubber, implies greater overall performance - inspite of the slightly smaller contact patch.

But, the question was about size, not relative performance. Given that, buying 245/50/17 for a model of tire who's outside diameter is greater than stock, would only add sidewall height, making the tire out of spec and decreasing performance.

Tramlining (once well worn) should be abundant. =)

Default so what it boils down to is....

Michelin, I guess you could call it, "mislabelled" the 245/50x17, Pilot A/S'. In that given size they should be taller than our stock tires but they are not. That or we can claim "individual tire mfgr variance."

Default If all model sizing was accurate, that size would be shorter than stock. =)

Manufacturer variance is definately to blame... and seemingly common! =)
