Because those come closest to being the correct outside diameters. (Revs/Mile are 776 stock - comparing against that is more accurate than comparing against the stock 26.8" diameter.)
If looking at other makes/models of tires, look at the outside diameter (in Revs/Mile), the rim width range for that tire, and decide what would fit best. Lots of pertinent info in the manufacturer spec page for a tire. =)

The 245 x 50 x 17" Pilot Sport A/S gives improved handling to the ar. Having said that the S03 is not a hybrid tire (not all season like the Sport A/S) and may also be an improvement. But, hey, almost anything is better than the OEM tires.

Thanks guys, just ordered SO3's in the size itacud suggested. After a little while I'll post my impressions. I hope the reports of tramlining have been a little exaggerated, but time'll tell.

sidewalls than the Pilot Sport A/S! =)
The sidewall height is the same for the S03 in 225/55/17 as the Pilot Sport A/S in 245/50/17. The S03 is legendary for having stiff sidewalls - certainly more so than an ultra high perf A/S tire. So equal height, stiffer sidewalls means an overall stiffer tire with less roll, and quicker turn in response. That combined with sticker max perf summer rubber, implies greater overall performance - inspite of the slightly smaller contact patch.
But, the question was about size, not relative performance. Given that, buying 245/50/17 for a model of tire who's outside diameter is greater than stock, would only add sidewall height, making the tire out of spec and decreasing performance.

Michelin, I guess you could call it, "mislabelled" the 245/50x17, Pilot A/S'. In that given size they should be taller than our stock tires but they are not. That or we can claim "individual tire mfgr variance."
