Default Definitive Word re. 255/50/17s and Stock Rims?

I have searched the archives, etc. and much has been written re. using 255/50/17s on stock rims, but I still do not have a firm understanding of this scenario. I do not wish to employ spacers. I am concerned about rubbing or any other issues brought on by the fact that in most cases (tire brands, styles) the tire height/diameter will be larger than stock 225/55/17 or the comparable 245/50/17.

Can anyone provide empirical evidence - naming tire brand/style where that 255/50/17 tire fit the rim and car with no issues, no spacers needed? I want a bigger tire and I like the selection in this size. Thanks...!

Default Try the "specs" page for a tire at tire rack to compare sizes

Doesn't tell you everything but gives you an idea of what you get as you change sizes.<ul><li><a href="http://www.tirerack.com/a.jsp?a=AR4&amp;url=%2Ftires%2FSpec.jsp%3Fmake%3DG oodyear%26amp%3Bmodel%3DWrangler%2BF1%26amp%3Bpart num%3D55VR7WRF1%26amp%3BvehicleSearch%3Dfalse%26am p%3BfromCompare1%3Dyes%26amp%3Bplace%3D9">Goodyear example<

Stock 225's? I would think no way you could fit 255's on those rims.

Default How about a diplomatic answer- it depends....

A few years back, itacud ran 255/50's on his stock twin spokes and had no problems. And Shtaes did too bu needed 8mm spacers in the front to clear his struts. I just can't remember the different brands they were running. So it depends on the tire itself and how broad the shoulder is. But still a bit too wide for the 7.5" width of the rim.

Default Whoa there hopscotch... 245/50 is the size and that was determined becasue the rolling diameter

is within a 2 points of stock. Itacud had 245/50 PS's just like the UBER_AR.

Default I ran both BFGoodrich KDWS, and Bridgestone RE750 on stock rims in 255-50-17 size, both rubbed on

front suspension without spacers.

Default Wheel is 7.5" wide- so 245 is widest rec tire- Why go bigger than stock?

I would go maybe 235/55 but what advantage is there to going bigger?

Handling and aesthetics (with the big wheel well arches).

Default Stock size tires look like crap compared to 255s, everyone at work makes fun of me when I put stock

size winter tires on.
