Default does anyone else notice the Tip shifts faster via the steering wheel buttons?

When I click the steering wheel buttons the indicator on the DIS changes gears instantly and the tip a split second later... but I notice a little lag when I shift with the console gear selector...

Default Hmmm, that's weird and interesting, I'll have to try it.

Still playing around with the tip, only had it a week - pretty cool I love how the steering wheel buttons only light up when you need them, so Audi...

Default this makes sense when you look at the electronics of the system..

My understanding(based on other postings) of the Tip is that the lever is effecting a series of magnetic sensors that are in the shift plate. When the "magnetic field" changes due to movement of the shift lever it activates the given circut.

The buttons on the wheel are a direct electrical connection to the circut so the reaction (shift) should be faster.

Default Agree...since the lever has to move into a certain position for the sensor to detect a shift...

...which is driven by this little magnet imbedded in the shifter's gasket below...

<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v739/hliu55/steering%20wheel/tiptronicmagnet.jpg">

When the lever is put into tip mode (thrown to the right), the magnet to the left of the lever shifts into position to be aligned with sensors in the circuit panel. That magnetic sensor then sends a sinal for the car to shift.

So yes, a direct button should be faster than the magnetic sensor.

Default Have you tried the 00032 tiptronic recode? The buttons are active even if the shifter is not in tip

...works on my 2002 A6 4.2 with the steering wheel buttons. Touch buttons to up- or down-shift, and it shifts, then reverts back to Drive (or Sport in my 2002) after 8-10 seconds of no active button shifting.

I noticed this as well but thought it was a mental thing. Interesting.

Default Thanx everyone. Saved me the misery of trying to fix my console shifter.

I like the SW buttons better anyway. Both hands gripping the wheel FTW.

No way, I like that they don't light up until you need them way cool!
