the '03 allroad brochure says that to fit the 4.2 in the allroad it has a chain instead of timing belt, and it was moved to the back of the engine. Sounds like a rather extreme change for one model. So does the A6 4.2 have a belt needing replacement while the allroad 4.2 has a permanent chain?

I suppose the new shorter version was developed for the A4 chassis (read S4 version). Putting it in the Allroad was a more opportunistic move to attract new buyers in the last 1-2 years of the allroad life.

I believe some parts have been lightened to allow the motor to rev higher, in addition to rearranging the drive belt(chain) from front to back for shortening purposes.
Somewhere on Audiworld there is a detailed news article describing the extent of changes - all for the S4 and allroad. =)
