Default Driving Speed

One thing that really bugs me about the AR is the high RPM's that you have to carry to travel at 75-85mph's on highways. It got me to thinking if there was any negative effect to the engine of high speed driving. I know this is a semi-childish question as the cars were obviously designed to do so but the way you have to push revs at those speeds kind of wigs me out. Especially how quickly the car drops from speeds at that level like it really has to be pushed to stay at those speeds. Thoughts?

It is what it is. The allroad wasn't designed as an economy car.

Default this is why its called allroad...

its geared for highway and light off road use.
The engine is well within its normal operating areas, just drive and enjoy.

Default Yeah, the first time I took mine on the highway I thought I was missing a gear.

I don't like 3000 RPM at 75 MPH, but, eh, all my 4-cylinders run at about that speed without any detrimental effects. I think we're used to seeing big V8s loafing along. My 5.0L Mustang runs about about 1800 RPM at 75, and the Corvette C5s I used to race would run about 1200 RPM at 80 MPH (50% overdrive!). 6th was practically useless for anything but sedate cruising on flat ground until you were at triple-digit speeds.

I know what you mean, but the cars were designed for the Autobahn, so I don't see any harm in it except to fuel mileage. On the other hand, there aren't many cars that can beat it on the roll at 75 MPH once the boost comes up. It accelerates like a freight train from, say 75 to 110, not that I ever drive that fast...

I agree, there is no reason it should scream at highway speeds, it's just dumb.

Just keep it full of German Castrol oil, and it will be fine!

I agree here, I am constantly amazed at what it has "left" over 75...same disclaimer applies

Default Funny, "...and lots of gas!" -- I notice the difference with my S6 RPMs, but also agree that the V6

has so much torque low and even below typical cruising speeds that proper throttle use produces the very enjoyable and intoxicating thrill (get them where you can) of effortless torque surfing up to any speed one desires without causing a downshift.
