Default ESP noise with ESP turned off...

When attempting to slide the car around a bit in the snow, I have been feeling and hearing an ESP/ABS noise. It sounds as if the sound is coming from the front left engine/wheel area. The car accellerates normally when dry conditions exist. It makes donuts and general mischief a bit difficult. My ma's A4 1.8T slid around beautifully in the snow with the esp turned off.

Any ideas?

Default As I understand the ESP, it never really turns completely off. When I turn mine off,

it still engages if I get the car really crossed up and out of whack. Just at a much higher threshhold. In fact, I've been told that if we turn off the ESP, and get the car way out of kilter, that under exxtreme conditions the ESP will re-engage itself. Haven't had that happen, but I've seen my ESP light flicker on if I throw the car sideways in a snowcovered parking lot and let it slide more than a couple of feet.

This occurance makes screwing around a real hassle. not nearly as easy or care-free as a 6spd....

could it be the diffs working or maybe ABS? both are possible w/ ESP off.
